About Lincoln's Gettysburg Address By Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is a speech by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, one of the best-known in American history. It was delivered by Lincoln during the American Civil War, on the afternoon of Thursday, November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg. Abraham Lincoln's carefully crafted address, secondary to other presentations that day, was one of the greatest and most influential statements of national purpose. In just over two minutes, Lincoln reiterated the principles of human equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence and proclaimed the Civil War as a struggle for the preservation of the Union sundered by the secession crisis, with "a new birth of freedom" that would bring true equality to all of its citizens. Lincoln also redefined the Civil War as a struggle not just for the Union, but also for the principle of human equality.

Lincoln Gettysburg Address By Abraham Lincoln Illustrated Abraham Lincoln 9781542300940 Books Reviews

I have visited Gettysburg and the most memorable experience was the day I hired a tour guide to drive my car through the battlefield. His knowledge and stories of the people and battle brought the Gettysburg battle and the scene of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to life.

James Daugherty's amazing illustrations do the same thing. The illustrations which accompany each passage of President Lincoln's words will leave you with lasting impressions of the meaning and emotions behind this short but powerful speech.

After you read the speech and take the time to absorb all the details of the illustrations, read the "afterward" and the pages included by James Daugherty which interpret his paintings. These two additions to the book are excellent resources.

My 9 year old is reading this to help prepare her for a report on Lincoln.
Finding ways to expose children to important speeches is always tricky. In this large picture book reprint, originally from 1947, now fresh for 2013 children of this generation can pour over the illustrated pages and truly get an education. There is a two-page spread with a phrase on each page. The Afterword is full of fascinating information followed by a legend with miniature images and description of the images with interpretations. This is gorgeous and able to provide hours of entertainment and interest.

I agree with a previous reviewer that this book, though beautifully-illustrated is pitched at a higher level and is perhaps best suited for upper elementary and up. The foreword by illustrator James Daugherty contains higher-level vocabulary than most elementary students would be familiar with and not only is it sophisticated in terms of vocabulary but also content. The foreword contains ideas and thoughts a bit above the comprehension of a young child. That being said, I think the book lends itself well for use in the social studies and history classrooms, for example third grade and up. With a bit of effort, educators and homeschooling parents can simplify the foreword and provide the gist of it to students.

The mural-like pictorial representations depicting the Gettysburg Address are beautifully done in large, full color format and can be used as a visual stimulus to launch a discussion on the context and significance of the Gettysburg Address. The afterword also needs to be simplified for the benefit of younger children's comprehension. At the end of the book, the artist provides explanations for each of his illustrations depicting crucial points of the address. Once again, these explanations might be difficult to comprehend for younger readers, but can be a great teaching and discussion tool in upper elementary and middle school social studies classrooms as well as high school history classrooms.
This is a book that gives some background and then the words of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. It states on the description that it is ages 6 years and up. The problem with this is that much of the book is written in a much higher level format than a 6 year old or most elementary age children will be interested in.

The forward is written on a high school level and is 2 solid pages of print. The address itself is printed out, again not at a 6 year old level. The main body of the book has 1 or 2 lines printed out on the pages. The problem with this is that the font is in italics. My 7 year old grandson, who can normally read quite well, had a very hard time with the words. The illustrations are in the form of what you see as the 1930's art deco murals in government buildings. Again my grandson did not find them very appealing, but confusing, with muscled bodies straining, working and fighting. The pictures are very complex.

There is an afterword, again written on a much higher lever and then a reproduction of Lincoln's handwritten copy of the address. Eight pages have small copies of the illustrations explaining them in higher level grammar.

This is a book that can teach; but younger children seem to be bored and confused and older are put off by the large size and the attempted juvenile outreach. It might encourage some to look at these noble words, but for many the way the book is formatted is too bewildering.
